If a small business owner reads “custom software for a fraction of agency pricing” and thinks the offer is too good to be real, that is the correct first response. A great deal of the noise about AI right now is being generated by people who do not know what they are doing. Some buyers have already been burned. Skepticism is the right starting position.

The cost shift

The cost-per-unit-of-output for custom software development has dropped roughly five to ten times in the last two years for the right kind of operator. Modern tooling has changed what one experienced engineer can produce alone. Work that used to require a team of four and a six-month timeline can often be delivered in weeks now.

This does not make all software cheap. It slides the spectrum of what is economical to build. The tier of project that used to cost fifty to a hundred thousand dollars from an agency is now within reach for buyers who were previously told to use Squarespace and live with the gaps. Squarespace is still cheaper than custom for a five-page brochure site. The shift is not that custom replaces off-the-shelf software. It is that custom that actually fits your business is now available to buyers who could not previously reach it.

The pricing of this engagement reflects that shift. It is not a discount, and it is not a quality compromise. It is the new floor.

What this is not

It is not “AI writes the code and I bill you for it.” Generated code with nobody accountable produces working-looking software that fails on contact with anything unanticipated. There is a market right now for that kind of work, and the buyers in it are the ones getting burned. That experience is part of what makes the skepticism reasonable.

The judgment is still mine. The architecture is still mine. The decisions about what to build, what not to build, how the system should fail, and how to keep it running after launch — those are not generated. They are 25 years of engineering practice applied with new tools.

The phrase that fits is not “vibe coding.” It is modern tools, in experienced hands.

The package deal

What you are paying for is a combination, not any single piece. Three components:

Each piece in isolation is a commodity. An experienced engineer without modern tooling is slower and more expensive. Modern tooling without experienced judgment produces working-looking slop. Cheap delivery without operational accountability is a repository that runs until it doesn’t, with no one on the hook when it stops.

Combined at this price, the offer is new. That is the entire pitch.

Why hire me over a freelancer with the same tools

The same modern tools are available to anyone. They are not the differentiator. The differentiator is knowing what to build, how to architect it for durability, what failure modes to design against, and how to keep it running after launch. Twenty-five years of that judgment, applied to the modern toolset, is not the same product as a junior contractor with the same toolset.

What to do with the skepticism

The discovery week exists for the same reason this article exists. You should not be asked to trust the claim before testing it. Buy a week of work, with a defined deliverable, with a clear exit at the end. If the rest of the offer is real, the week will demonstrate it. If it is not, you are out a week’s fee and you have a written scope you can take elsewhere.

The economics changed. The shape of the offer is unfamiliar because the economics are unfamiliar. The right response to unfamiliar is a small first step, not a leap of faith.
